Apparently the dreaded Miami Attorney Jack Bruce Thompson is attempting to stop Halo 3's launch or sue Microsoft.


Thompson forwarded Game Almighty a copy of the following letter supposedly sent along to Microsoft Chairman, Bill Gates:

Dear Mr. Gates:



As you know, the Federal Trade Commission has repeatedly found that games rated “Mature” by the video game industry-captured Entertainment Software Rating Board are routinely sold to kids under the age of 17 despite the age rating. The most recent failure rate of the ratings on “Mature” games, according to the FTC, is 42%. The entire rating system is a fraud, and “broken,” the latter description aptly provided by Senator Hillary Clinton.



As you also know, Lee Boyd Malvo trained on Microsoft’s Halo to further enable him to become the remarkably efficient “DC Beltway Sniper.” That was reported by NBC News at the time and was noted in Malvo’s criminal trial.



You appeared on CBS’ 60 Minutes II and rather revealing and usefully noted that “the cool thing about these games is that they transport you to a world you think is real.” Precisely. Capcom has recently disclosed to investors that your video game industry’s violent games, sold to children, pose a real hazard to the health of the industry. Right on.



The hyperviolent Microsoft Xbox 360 game Halo 3 is scheduled by your company for commercial release in September of this year. The Beta version that was released last week shows us all just how violent the game is and how inappropriate it is for play by anyone under 17, as the “Mature” rating it will surely receive indicates.



Here’s the deal, Mr. Gates: Either Microsoft undertakes dramatic, real steps, through its marketing, wholesale, and retail operations to assure that Halo 3 is not sold, via the Internet and in stores, directly to anyone under 17, or I shall proceed to make sure that Microsoft is held to that standard by appropriate legal means. I have done that before successfully as to Best Buy, and I shall do so again as to Microsoft and all retailers of Halo 3.

I think you need to learn math. Thompson could only sue for at most a billion dollars. He could sue on this math. He would take the MOST liberal estimate on how many copies of Halo3 would be sold, ever. Then he would take the MOST liberal percentage of those games sold to minors, and he would sue for the value of those games. He wouldnt win though because in truth it is not Microsoft's fault for Halo 3 falling into the hands of minors, but in fact the parents' fault, so no blame could be put on Microsoft.

Taking out Thompson's liscense will bring a greater force upon us. If he loses his liscense he will urge Congress to do something about it, and given Congresses history towards videogames and the fact that everyone in congress thinks that videogames are for kids only and dont realize that the average age for a gamer is 26, he might actually slow down halo 3's growth. He wont delay the launch, but he will make it harder for Halo 3 to get to some peoples hands. It will take Congress realizing and accepting that videogames arent just for kids anymore to solve this issue. It will also take them realizing that it is not their responsibilaty but the parents responibilaty to regulate what their kids play and dont play.

Im getting halo 3 regardless if i can't buy it i will just get my mom to go to the store and get it.... there realy is no way to stop kids under 17 from playing these games besides making it illegal.

Also congress wont listen to a washed out lawyer who lost all credibility and his law licence if he does lose it.

If he does that what a big baby why does he even want to do it?

1) He wants attention (like Al Gore)
2) He is a Playstaion Fan and want to kill Microsoft
3) He wants to make millions of dollar on something he knows he would win on

This letter was sent to microsoft right after the beta and it was LONG ago and microsoft has not stop making halo 3 so i guess they realy dont care and microsoft could buy the best lawyer in the world if they got sued anyway.

Hey Microsoft isnt doing anything wrong big deal the game is violent they put a M rated tag on it so what they are doing is legal. This Jack thompson fellow cant touch microsoft as long as they follow the ratings and put the right level on there all he can do is whine and bitch like a little panzy girl because hes a pussy and wants to try and ruin everyones own life because he was probably that guy who got left at home during Prom cause he was too big of a nerd to get a hot date.
